As an emerging seat of learning, NBU is a key university Zhejiang Province, China, and one of the universities in the country's “Shuang Yi Liu” (“Double First-Class”) Initiative. NBU was set up in 1986 with the donations from Sir Yue-Kong Pao, the shipping magnet in Hong Kong, with its name inscribed by Mr. Deng Xiaoping. It is a crystallization of joint efforts among the provincial government of Zhejiang, MOE and Ningbo Municipality, as well as the State Oceanic Administration and Ningbo Municipality.
To be geared to the strategic needs of the state and the region, NBU attaches great importance to academic, scientific and technological innovation. Today, its ranks among Top 100 universities in graduate education.
The admission of graduate students and Ph.D. candidates started in 1990 and 2007, respectively. There are 6 primary doctoral programs, 3 post-doctoral research stations, 30 primary master programs, 23 professional master programs
NBU is entitled to recommend students enjoying examination waiver to graduate study, and enroll international students sponsored by the Chinese Government Scholarship and students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Today, NBU is home to more than 7,100 graduate students, with an annual total enrollment of over 2,500 applicants at all fields of learning.

Ningbo University offers a variety of programs, including degree programs (bachelor's, master’s and doctoral programs), non-degree programs (general scholars and senior scholars) and non-degree Chinese language programs.
Various scholarships are available for students such as Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A, Type B, Type C), Confucius Institute Scholarship, Zhejiang Government Scholarship, Ningbo Government Scholarship, Ningbo University Scholarship and etc..
In academic year 2019-2020, 20 bachelor’s programs, 28 postgraduate programs (including joint programs) will be offered for international students. Furthermore, students who want to learn Chinese and experience Chinese culture can undertake non-degree Chinese language program.
